Then the third cycle will start, and the main data coverage period will be pushed forward to 1997. Apart from the overall figures representing Hong Kong people, HKPORI has also released analyses per political camps and social strata to better understand the ups and downs of different people’s sentiments. In the coming months, HKPORI will release similar demographic analyses of PSI more regularly and frequently (tentatively set at a cycle of 12 weeks), together with in-depth analyses of people with different views, to demonstrate the power and value of secondary data analysis. |

2023-07-11 | The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) has already started its regular telephone survey of July, which covers the following series: popularity of the Chief Executive, popularity of the government, people’s appraisal of society’s current conditions, as well as people’s feelings towards governments and peoples across the strait and in other parts of the world. The last item will not be publicly released, but all are welcome to contact us to purchase survey data for academic research, policy discussions, internal reference and all other lawful purposes. Meanwhile, starting from this month, a question on the popularity of the Chief Executive has been revised from “If a general election of the Chief Executive were to be held tomorrow, and you had the right to vote, would you vote for John Lee?” to “If you had the right to decide whether to reappoint or dismiss John Lee as the Chief Executive now, how would you decide?” The former design is a common way to pose the question in democratic societies around the globe and was introduced to Hong Kong by us in 2002 for use in tandem with support rating on a scale of 0-100. The move back then was to echo the development in Hong Kong at that time. The current adjustment of question wording is also to echo the development in Hong Kong now. |
2023-07-04 | As we enter July, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) begins its fifth anniversary, which is also the 33rd anniversary of the research team. We will finalize, announce and implement various new initiatives, and explain the new changes through our online platform. Today, we mark a new beginning by issuing the first release of our “Second Generation PSI”. Last May, we reduced the frequency of our regular press conferences from twice a week to four times a month. In August, we further reduced it to twice a month. Starting this month, we will cut it down to once every month, but the number of online press releases will remain at once a week, except for holidays and weeks with press conferences. At the same time, we will increase our written communication with people, in order to facilitate interaction and to keep a good record for future publications. We will announce our plan in due course. |
2023-06-28 | The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) launched its “One Country Two Systems 25-year Mid-tern Review” in June last year. Including this “25 Years of Public Sentiment Index (PSI)” released today, a total of 25 wrap-ups have been completed, and HKPORI’s mission to preserve the historical data of the first half of “one country, two systems” is thereby completed. Starting from July, we will step up our development and application of secondary data analysis, and deepen our work in multi-media civic education. We have already announced our plan to reduce our self-funded data collection activities, as well as turning several survey series into internal reference, academic research and commissioned services instead of free releases. We will formulate various guidelines and price lists in due course, to cater for societal demand for these studies. Moreover, after July, we will revise the quantification and release methods of our Public Sentiment Index (PSI) to cover the term of the incumbent Chief Executive, as well as to quantify the sentiments of different population groups. Please stay tuned for the announcement in July. |
2023-06-20 | Our research team was founded in June, while our Institute became independent in July. We also set May 4 to be our Foundation Day. Thus, every year from May to July, we review and brainstorm our future development. This year is no exception, especially when we are about to finish our “One Country Two Systems 25-year Mid-term Review”. We need to examine the demand for public opinion data, the historical development of Hong Kong society, and the role of HKPORI in promoting science and democracy. In May this year, our President has already forecasted that the historical and global positioning of HKPORI would change again. In early June, we announced that we would cut down our self-funded data collection activities, step up our secondary data analysis, and also adjust the scope of our tracking surveys in terms of topic and release format. Today, near the end of our review process, we have tentatively decided to cancel about one-fourth of our regular survey questions, and about one-third of the remaining questions will be used for internal reference, academic research and commissioned services, instead of free releases. These topics tentatively cover our handover series, ethnic identity, cross-strait issues, global awareness, June Fourth Incident, Councillor ratings, disciplinary forces and some social indicators. We will finalize the list by the end of this month and announce it in July. Meanwhile we are setting up an academic research team to develop our secondary data studies, in order to make better use of the data collected over the past 30 years or so. People from all walks of life, especially HKPORI subscribers, are welcome to contact us on how to use our unpublished data legally for collaborative projects or commissioned studies, in order to promote civic education and empirical-based professional analysis. We will set up a system for such data access later, we welcome email enquiries and will answer them one by one openly online. |
2023-06-20 | Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) today forecasted that the 25th and final wrap-up of the “One Country Two Systems 25-year Mid-term Review” would be released in a press conference on June 28 (next Wednesday), under the theme of “Public Sentiment Index 1997-2022”, spanning across four complete CE terms. By then, HKPORI would have completed its mission to preserve the historical data of the first half of “one country, two systems”. This morning, we have already announced online how we would reduce our self-funded data collection activities, step up our secondary data analysis, and also adjust the scope of our tracking surveys in terms of topic and release format. We have tentatively decided to cancel about one-fourth of our regular survey questions, and about one-third of the remaining questions will be used for internal reference, academic research and commissioned services, instead of free releases. 2023-06-15 | Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) launched the “One Country Two Systems 25-year Mid-term Review” in June last year. Since then, 24 wrap ups of data have been released, and the last one will be completed by end of this month. HKPORI’s mission to preserve the historical data of the first half of “one country, two systems” will then complete. As usual, HKPORI has already started this year’s mid-year review to keep up with the times. Initially, we have decided starting this July, we will strengthen the development and application of secondary data, and to further step up our multi-media civic education efforts. At the same time, due to resource constraints, we will also reduce our self-funded activities in collecting and releasing primary data in order to keep pace with the public demand for such data. Specifically, HKPORI will use secondary data analysis more frequently in future releases and make better use of the data collected over the past 30 years or so. In addition, HKPORI will significantly reduce the frequency of data collection for certain survey series and will adjust the format of releases. That is, certain survey series may only be used for academic studies, internal reference and paid services, but not for public release. HKPORI will continue to uphold the spirit of May Fourth and serve the community, more details will be announced in due course. |
